The conference will investigate how theoretical reflection on travel and history informed the practice of exploring and representing foreign countries and peoples in the early modern period. Authors under discussion include Montaigne, Hakluyt, and Johann David Michaelis, and travel experience in Europe, Arabia, Persia and the Ottoman Empire and Spanish Empires.

Several speakers involved in the Hakluyt project are taking part in the event: Daniel Carey, Anders Ingram, Ladan Niayesh and Sebastian Sobecki.
